Today a gaussian splat has to be uploaded as a single .ply, which puts a ceiling on how big a capture can be. Above roughly 200M splats, models render incompletely or fail outright.
Support for splats delivered as a 3D Tiles tileset would remove that ceiling: the viewer streams only the tiles and levels of detail it needs, so a capture at its finest LOD can be viewed without decimating it first or splitting it into pieces.
Reported by a customer working with Xgrids / Lixel Cyber Color exports: a 330M-splat model rendered incompletely (they shipped a 168M-splat LOD instead), and a 723M-splat model errored out even when split in two.
